He was of samurai lineage, from a family which in former times had been vassals of Ryukyu Dynasty nobles.

By age 11 he had already made a name for himself in Ryukyu-style martial arts. Beginning his training under Master Azato Anko, it wasn´t long before he equaled his master in ability, and shared with him the distinction of being the "most accomplished" martial artist in the field. He also learned karate-jutsu (written with characters that mean "Chinese-hand martial art") from Master Itosu Anko. Both his teachers were impressed by his nobility of character.

As over the years he pursued his training and continuously developed his remarkable skills, Master Funakoshi became chairman of the Okinawa Martial Arts Society, as well as an instructor at the Okinawa Teacher´s School. Then in 1922, when he was 54 years old, he intro-duced Okinawan karate-jutsu at the first Ministry of Education (now Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture)-sponsored Physical Education Exhibition. This introduction, the first ever public display of karate-jutsu in Japan, was a stunning success. And the previously unknown martial artist Funakoshi Gichin rose to instant fame throughout the Japanese world of martial arts.

Immediately the founder of modern judo, Kano Jigoro, invited Master Funakoshi and his pupil Gima Shinkin to the Kodokan judo dojo to give a demonstration of kata. The highly-attended event filled the Kodokan dojo to capacity. It was so well-received that Master Funakoshi found himself pressed on all sides to stay in Tokyo.

Excited by the opportunity to further promote the martial art that he had done so much to introduce to Japan, Master Funakoshi subsequently began teaching it at Tokyo´s Meiseijuku, a dormitory for Okinawan students there. In 1922, he published a book entitled "Ryukyu Kempo Karate." It was the first formal exposition in Japan on the art of karate-jutsu. Not only were its contents fresh and novel, it was also beautifully written, and immediately created an unprecedented karate boom.

As the popularity of karate-jutsu began to spread, Master Funakoshi produced the first ever "Dan Ranking Certification" in April, 1924.

Around the same time, with the encouragement of his teacher of Buddhism, Abbot Furukawa Gyodo of Enkakuji Temple in Kamakura, Master Funakoshi started practicing Zen. He contemplated the well-known Buddhist teaching that says "form is emptiness and emptiness is form." He began to see the relevance of that teaching to his martial art, and ultimately changed the characters for karate from kara + te ("Chinese" + "hand") to kara + te ("empty" + "hand").

Then, in order to popularize the "local" Okinawan martial art in the rest of Japan, Master Funakoshi synthesized a complete system of techniques and theory, and changed the Chinese and Okinawan names of the kata into standard Japanese. In 1929, after much thought and reflection, he also changed the name of karate-jutsu ("Chinese-hand martial art") to karate-do ("the way of karate," or "the way of the empty hand"). He then defined the Twenty Precepts of Karate, and established a grand karate philosophy.

At last the way of karate had come into its own, and was gaining popularity all across Japan. The number of people wishing to begin training was growing daily-so much so that it became difficult to find a place for them to practice. So in 1939 Master Funakoshi established the "Shotokan" dojo, which he built at his own expense. ("Shoto" was the literary first name he used when doing calligraphy and writing poetry. "Shoto" means "Pine Waves," and refers to the sound of wind blowing through the pines, which resembles the sound of ocean waves.)
Funakoshi Gichin Monument

By this time, Master Funakoshi had long been teaching karate to high-school and university students. As a result, karate clubs had sprung up at higher education institutions all over Japan-which is another reason why karate has become as respected as it is today.

In the air raids of World War II, the Shotokan dojo was destroyed, and the growth of karate came to a halt. But after the war, followers of Funakoshi´s way re-grouped, and in 1949 they formed the Japan Karate Association, with Funakoshi Gichin as Supreme Master.

On April 10, 1957, the Ministry of Education gave official recognition to the JKA, and it became a legal entity. A mere sixteen days later, at the age of 89, Master Funakoshi passed away. A large public memorial service was held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan (Ryogoku National Sumo Hall), attended by more than 20,000 people, including many famous names who came to pay their respects.

A memorial monument to Master Funakoshi was established at Enkakuji Temple in Kamakura.

From the F.S.K.A. web site.Sensei Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264954422040494151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8908581865321682717.post-54478893689312634562009-07-18T02:22:00.002-04:002009-07-18T02:26:59.033-04:00Master Tsutomu Ohshima<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 237px; height: 262px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hAzHiO1eQ4Q/SmFrCByjP_I/AAAAAAAAAFw/Pxj-5mIVTy4/s400/ohshimateaching.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359682714131972082" />

Tsutomu Ohshima is the founder and Shihan (Chief Instructor) of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), and is also recognized as chief instructor of many other international Shotokan organizations. Mr. Ohshima's branch of the Shotokan world has become known as Shotokan Ohshima Karate.

Mr. Ohshima was born on August 6, 1930, and by the age of five had already entered the disciplined and rigorous world of Japanese martial arts. Practicing daily, he pursued sumo wrestling from the age of five until he was fifteen; kendo (Japanese sword fighting) from the ages of eight to fifteen, and judo from the ages of nine to thirteen.

Mr. Ohshima's distinguished association with Shotokan karate began at Waseda University, beginning in 1948. While he was there he trained directly under the style's founder, Master Funakoshi, until 1953. His training was also influenced by his leading seniors, who were, in order of seniority:

* Hiroshi Noguchi, First Waseda Captain
* Shigeru Egami
* Toshio Kamata-Watanabe
* Tadao Okuyama
* Matsuo Shibuya

Seniors Egami, Kamata-Watanabe, and Okuyama have each honored Mr. Ohshima and Shotokan Karate of America by visiting the United States to observe and instruct our members.

At the All-Japan Sandan Promotional in 1952 Master Funakoshi personally awarded Mr. Ohshima his sandan (third degree black belt) rank, while honoring him with the highest score of any participant. Also in 1952 he became the Captain of the Waseda University Karate Club, working with Master Funakoshi. In 1957 Mr. Ohshima also received his godan (fifth degree black belt) rank from Master Funakoshi, the highest rank awarded by Master Funakoshi and still the highest rank achievable in SKA.

It was also during 1952 that Mr. Ohshima innovated the judging system still used in modern day tournaments. However, for students wishing to participate, he cautions that tournaments should not be viewed as an expression of true karate itself.

Mr. Ohshima left Japan in 1955 to continue his studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where, in January 1956, he led his first U.S. practice. The first university karate club in the United States was founded by Mr. Ohshima, at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA, in 1957. In 1959 the Southern California Karate Association (SCKA) was founded, and for the next ten years the reputation and membership of the SCKA continued to grow. Many new dojos were started by Mr. Ohshima's black belt instructors in California and across the nation. Thus the organization was renamed Shotokan Karate of America in 1969.

Sensei Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264954422040494151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8908581865321682717.post-79832293127570164342009-07-18T02:15:00.000-04:002009-07-18T02:17:19.354-04:00Shotokan Masters Bio FilmSensei Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264954422040494151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8908581865321682717.post-86828581399911945822009-07-18T01:51:00.004-04:002009-07-18T02:02:03.647-04:00Master Hidetaka Nishiyama<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 247px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hAzHiO1eQ4Q/SmFjBjS0JuI/AAAAAAAAAFo/V0-VF262uEY/s400/nishiyama1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359673909852776162" />

Nishiyama, Hidetaka

Master Hidetaka Nishiyama is considered to be one of the great masters and pioneers of Japanese Traditional Karate. He began his study in 1943 at the age of fifteen, with Master Gichin Funakoshi, the man who introduced Okinawan karate to Japan. At that time, karate was not yet popular. Other martial arts, such as judo and kendo, were taught as compulsory classes in Japanese middle schools, similar to American physed classes. After a difficult search he found Master Funakoshi and his karate dojo in Tokyo. He continued his study from Funakoshi after he went to college.

In the late 40's the American Strategic Air Command (SAC) special forces began combat training in judo, aikido and karate. In a recent interview, Master Nishiyama related some of the events of that time period:

"We were invited to the American bases to instruct... I was the youngest. Every time we went to the bases we were expected to give demonstrations. These were very tough, I had to break many boards so pretty soon my hands and forearms were in a bad state. This happened 3 or 4 times a day. Eventually I couldn't move my arms." According to a student of Master Nishiyama, "...many times the American instructors would present Mr. Nishiyama with very thick boards that had been soaked in water. Mr Nishiyama never failed to break these boards and never once asked his seniors to break them for him." Although this was a difficult time for Master Nishiyama and his fellow karate enthusiasts, it helped him realize that karate could be spread internationally. They were subsequently invited to the United States in 1953 to tour every SAC base in the U.S. and Cuba.

Master Nishiyama later became one of the original founders of the Japan Karate Association, home of the famous JKA Instructors School which has produced some of the most famous karate masters in the world: Kanazawa, Enoeda, Shirai and Mikami. In 1960 he published "Karate: The Art of Empty Hand Fighting". It is still considered the definitive text on the subject and the best selling karate book in history. In 1961 he moved to the United States and founded the All American Karate Federation (AAKF). In 1978, the AAKF completely restructured its organization and changed the name to the American Amateur Karate Federation. The AAKF is a public benefit, non-profit corporation and is the sole Traditional Amateur Karate governing body in the U.S. It is also a member of the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF), the worldwide governing body of Traditional Karate.

The AAKF controls national and regional competition and develops technical advancement through special training seminars throughout the US. The AAKF hosted the very first karate competitions between the U.S. and Japan in the historic 1964 Goodwill Tournament held in Los Angeles. In 1968 the AAKF planned and hosted the World International Karate Tournament, the first world scale competition which was held in Los Angeles and Mexico City in cooperation with the Mexica Karate Federation.

The ITKF was founded in 1975 to help avoid confusion between the "new" karate styles and traditional karate, and to maintain consistency in traditional karate training throughout the world. Currently, Master Nishiyama and the ITKF are diligently working with the International Olympic Committee to have traditional karate recognized as an official Olympic event.

Master Nishiyama is now working on a new karate book aimed at karate instructors. He feels that in many geographically larger countries like the U.S., there tends to be a lack of continuity among instructors and their teaching methods because they cannot come together as frequently due to distance. He hopes this book will advance the level of instruction and philosophy of karate in every country that teaches the art.

Master Nishiyama continues to travel throughout the world teaching karate. He is currently the Chairman of the AAKF and President of the ITKF and is one of the highest ranking black belts in karate (9th Dan). He resides in Los Angeles with his wife and their three daughters.

A Short Biography of Master Hidetaka Nishiyama

1928- Born October 10 in Tokyo, Japan

1933- Started Kendo training

1938- Started Judo training

1943- Earned Kendo shodan ranking.
Started karate training at Master Gichin Funakoshi's dojo, the Shotokan.

1945- Enrolled at Takushoku University. You
were there? What really happened! "Yeah, you bet I was there. I was sitting
right there at ringside when Enoeda swept Frank's front leg and then using
the same foot he roundhouse kicked him right in the face as he went down.
After Frank went down all I saw was blood. It was a great technique but it sure gave us a wake up call and after that everything changed. Frank got serious, very serious after that in fact we all got serious and realized that this isn't a game anymore and that is how we played it after that. You know when we went to class we never new if we were going to live or die it was very serious from there on in."

These are the exact words of Ray Dalke one of the few American Karate
Legends. In a recent interview Dalke told it all, the truth about the karate school of hard knocks. After forty plus years few people have stuck it out but he has and in this interview you will learn why the Japanese Karate Masters lost control of Karate in America and now in Europe as well. You may be shocked!

DW - How long have you been training and where did you start?

RD -Over forty years, three years of judo and dabbled in other styles as well as a little kenpo with Ed Parker before training in Shotokan Karate. I formally
started with Dan Ivan. Dan Ivan would take us down to Ed Parker's. Dan was
my first instructor, things back then were pretty open.

DW- Who did you train with after Dan?

RD- Nishiyama all these years.

DW -What year did you start training with him?

RD- Early 1961.

DW- What was your 1st impression when you saw Nishiyama?

RD- Back then it was a different time and you looked at people differently. He
was just something very special and I had heard about karate and how you
could kill someone with a karate chop or something. He was more of a
novelty than anything. He was someone you could look at and realize he
could really do you in bare handed. I was looking for self-defense with Dan
Ivan and not realizing it was Shotokan or anything cause back then we didn't
know about styles. Then I saw Nishiyama perform and I was not quite sure about him, as he could not speak English. It was broken English and I couldn't understand what he was saying. I thought that zenkutsu dachi and kiba dachi were all the same so instead of trying to understand him I just copied him. Then as his English got better he was better able to explain the dynamics. Then prior to this Nishiyama and Dan Ivan had split up and Nishiyama Sensei had opened up a dojo through Oshima. I knew as soon as I started karate that it was something I would never stop.

DW - How was the training with Nishiyama back then?

RD - It was savage. It was really brutal. Really brutal! Because
Nishiyama was the main man back then and several top guys would come and
train with us. Okazaki would come and train, Yaguichi, Mikami, Enoeda,
Shirai, Kanazawa these were our training/sparring, partners. Kase was more
of an instructor but not at first. We got a chance to get after these guys
and they were not very gentle men. I trained with them all including Sensei Oshima. I picked Nishiyama as my sensei. I was looking for some direction and he seemed to be the right man to guide me. He was intelligent, a deliberate man with no hesitation. He carried himself as an athlete and as someone special. We never sparred with the man he just had our respect and that will never change. Even big Frank Smith, I don't care what he says, that will just never change. We just trusted his word. It was a different time back then and there was also a big difference in terms of the whole of American philosophy. We were going through the Berlin crisis. We had the Cuban crisis. We were just out of World War II by about 10 years or so. I just missed everything barely and we were getting into Vietnam and you know put the Americans in a corner and boy oh boy watch out. Things were just different back then--a different society. I don't think the karate has changed it's still the same. The people have changed so the message has to be a little different now.

DW - What is your opinion of kick boxing, UFC or Muay Thai?

RD - Well I think that they are all good sports if that is what you want to
do and get hammered around. But I like boxing and collegiate wrestling not
so much the pro wrestling but some of those guys are serious and huge. I
just can't imagine fighting Shaqille O'Neil at 315 pounds 7'2 or something
like that. It is wonderful to get old because you realize that you better
pick a fight with someone you can whup like that old lady over there. There
wouldn't be any amount of money that would get me to fight those guys. I
don't want to take anything away from those guys but to defend myself
against them is a different thing and I wouldn't hesitate a second, because
if I new it was going to happen I would be way ahead of them. I think that
is what karate has taught me, the final thing is to be really deliberate and
believe me I won't hesitate even a second.

DW - Today people refer to karate as a sport. Do you agree with that?

RD - No not real karate. If it was just kick/punch then you would have to
stop training at 35 or 40 years of age. No real karate is self-defense.
They have these new rules out well let me tell you I would hate to be
ipponed by Frank Smith once and then have to go another 3 or 4 minutes with
him. I tell yeh that someone is going to get seriously hurt. Well that is sport but you know competition has become so subjective and you got these referees saying whether it was good enough or not. When we fought in the sixties it was contact but I don't want to exaggerate but it really was a rough go. We had legs broken, teeth knocked out, fingers broken, ribs broken but this was not real contact. I look at these guys who do this tough man contest and UFC. These guys are really tough and they are the guys I keep my eyes on in a bar
and if they get really rowdy I am going to go home and have a beer if not it
just might be "bang" and we will get something really going on. But that is
not what I think decent people should be doing and saying. I don't want to fight
and roll around on the ground, but that is what these type of guys are
doing if they aren't fighting in the ring they are fighting in bars and they are looking for someone to give them a go but this is what I have trained my whole life to avoid and I can't do this by just being a fighter. I am a karate-ka who practices the whole art including the philosophy.

DW - You have been training now for 40 years do you think that the western
world karate has caught up to the Japanese karate?

RD - Oh yeah. We caught up to them in 1967 and 1969 big time. Nishiyama's
students caught them and when they brought in this guy to fight ten of us
and he couldn't get through us and that was the JKA grand champion. The idea
was that they would bring in one guy to beat ten Americans (the Los Angeles
team) and that wasn't going to happen and I really felt sorry for the
Japanese champion cause he really got beat, beat badly. It was the late
60s or early 70s right around in there. Physically, technically we are as
good as they are but culturally and socially we are not there. We are not
even close to them and their history and their Musashi's and their great
heritage and all these types of things we are just not even close to them.

DW - How important do you think the bunkai of the kata is?

RD - Well there is so many different interpretations of bunkai, oh my God
that is one of the things I learned when I went to the JKA Instructors
school. It is like every instructor has a different interpretation to the
technique...let me put it this way Sensei Nishiyama rarely ever taught
bunkai in fact I can't remember when he did teach it.

DW - The guys who have been training for as long as you have mention that the Japanese don't like to give up the control thing. How do you guys feel about that?

RD - Well that caused a lot of pain in the USA in the past and Europe is now
experiencing that. You know there is a top and we don't want to be the top
but with all the years we have done this we don't want to be at the back of
the bus we are somewhere in the middle. The problem is that the Japanese, I
think, never expected us to stick around as long as some of us have. You
know forty years or so. I think they figured we would stick around for five, eight or ten years and then quit. This has forced some of us to form our own small groups where we are prepared to share the top with each other. On the other hand, I look at Sensei Nishiyama and he sees me in class and I am 62 years old and he says I am looking pretty good and he never said that before and that is what I have always striven for, to get that nod of approval. I don't give
that nod very often to my students but I do give it when they deserve it and I
am prepared to share the top with them if they deserve it.

If some guy has done karate for 25 years he is no amateur and he
deserves recognition. Lesley Safar was Okazaki's top student and he left and said you know Sensei you just don't want to share. And you know it always comes
back to another thing called money and that is a pretty important
thing especially when you are a professional and you have a wife and family.

If it is an international organization and I am an 8th dan or 9th dan and that says I have a lot of experience and then I deserve a piece of the gate as well as them. I underwent their training and I broke my body and I wouldn't have been the person I am now without it. But I don't just credit them for it; I also credit myself for hanging in there. They will not share with us, we get crumbs while they get the big portions...but what was really not fair was when they brought in junior instructors and put them in front of us and that is when some of us just said wow! I have been training twice as long as this guy and your putting him up as my Sensei? Don't do that and look at us as equal to a junior Japanese, and that is pretty hard for a guy like me to chew and it was really hard for a guy like Frank Smith who is really ego motivated and it is just too bloody bad that a guy like that quit karate fifteen years ago because when he had something to say he kept his mouth shut. But I didn't, I said what you guys are doing is wrong. I told Okazaki Sensei that I don't want to drive the bus but I don't want to sit at the back of it either. I paid my dues and spent my time yet you want me to bring in Mr. Yaguichi to test my green belts. What the hell are you doing? Who pays my rent? It boils down to business.

DW - What did he say to that?

RD - Ah... "You don't understand the politics." I said Ok; you do it but I
want a promise from you in writing that when I can't pay my rent next month
you will pay. He said, "No, No you are supposed to run your own business." Well
Then, I can't do it and that is when we had our parting of the ways with both
Mr. Nishiyama and Okazaki and that is exactly what has happened with Leon
Sells and Mikami the same way. They won't let him test and he has been
training damn near as long as me and Mikami kicked him out because he gave a
couple of black belt tests. Greer Golden, the guy I went through Instructor
training school with thinks he is Japanese but he is not. He will learn one of these days. He is 67 years old and he is my sempai by five years and he can test up to 3rd kyu brown belt because he wasn't a nice boy. Try that on. It is business but the Japanese make all the money.

DW - Yeah Italy is starting to have a problem.

RD - Yeah Spain is having a problem too.

DW - Well Falsoni in Italy figured it out years ago with Shirai. Both Falsoni and Spartaco Bertoletti.

RD - You know that is Ok and in fact I hope that Sensei Nishiyama is a multi-
millionaire but don't stop me from becoming a millionaire. Don't stop me
from growing.

DW - After all these years of practice what is the meaning of practicing
karate do?

RD - Well I think it all changes. I think what you start with and what you
end up with is two different things. I think that age has everything to do
with it. You know in the beginning it takes on a shallow look, you know its
about kicking, punching and beating someone up. When I trained at Dan Ivan's
we would train and then go to the bar and then try out some of these
techniques and sometimes they did work and sometimes they didn't and you
would get your ass kicked. Then as the years go along you try to change
yourself and the technical takes over and then you have the strong years.
When I was in my 20s you just couldn't tire me out and I would train eight
hours a day and then in my 30s, I felt extremely strong and they were my
strongest years. Then in my 40s, I pushed away from being the instructor
and started to relax a bit more and my body became really flexible and
almost to the point that my body felt like I was doing Tai Chi.

DW - My last question is "What have you learned through karate?"

RD - That is a good question. I will tell you what it has taught me. It
has taught me patience, a virtue of Japanese culture. I remember I asked
Nishiyama when I could take a test and he would say "A little more, a little more--You Wait. You know 25 years later a little wait but it really has taught me patience and it's like a snake just waiting and then when you go...go all the way. Born in April 1913 in Yamaguchi Prefecture, he was a descendant of the Sanada clan, in the Nagano region. His ancestors were highly-skilled instructors of kenjutsu (the art of swordsmanship).

Upon entering Takushoku University in 1932, Master Nakayama immediately joined the university’s karate club, studying under Master Funakoshi Gichin and one of the master’s sons, Funakoshi Yoshitaka. Deciding to devote his life to karate, he traveled to China after graduation for further study and training.

When he returned from China in May 1946, he got together with fellow Shotokan practitioners from his university days to revive the Shotokan karate tradition with Funakoshi Gichin as Supreme Master. Together, in 1949, they established the Japan Karate Association. In 1955 a headquarters dojo was built at Yotsuya in Tokyo. It spurred the building of JKA branch dojo all across Japan.

Master Nakayama also invented karate’s first match system: the first ever JKA All Japan Karate Championship was held at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in October, 1957—and was attended by so many participants and spectators that the venue was filled to capacity.

His adaptation of kata and kumite for the match system was a huge success; the 5th JKA All Japan Karate Championship in 1961 was even attended by His Majesty the Crown Prince of Japan (now His Majesty the Emperor of Japan). Karate was growing increasingly popular throughout the world.

Master Nakayama valued the spiritual aspects of karate that his teacher Funakoshi Gichin espoused, especially the virtue of modesty and the spirit of harmony. He never tired of teaching, by his example more than his words, to demonstrate these qualities requires not only a deep sense of propriety, but also a constant reminder that “there is no first attack in karate.”

In actual practice, Master Nakayama insisted that each technique should demonstrate one’s powerful and wholehearted personal best. He also emphasized that it is crucial to study the inseparable trinity of karate—kihon, kata, and kumite as one. Master Nakayama continually reminded everyone to keep in mind that “the way of karate we pursue is a bare-handed martial art which we practice with an unwavering heart in a state of emptiness; it is a way of developing the personality.” Please also see the Dojo-Kun, the standard or motto of the Shotokan style of Karate-Do schools.

In his later years, he summarized all his techniques and philosophy in the famous 11-volume series entitled “Best Karate.”

Master Nakayama passed away in 1987.

Sensei Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264954422040494151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8908581865321682717.post-1094444922720867992009-07-14T21:40:00.007-04:002009-07-31T02:30:24.058-04:00Shihan Hirokazu Kanazawa<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 272px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hAzHiO1eQ4Q/Sl0z1VDb_nI/AAAAAAAAABs/MIyz5IBMMq0/s400/06kanazawa2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358496122918403698" />

Born in Iwate Prefecture in Japan in 1931, Shihan Hirokazu Kanazawa is one of the best known and most widely respected Shotokan karate Masters in the world today.

Shihan Kanazawa's karate was honed during his time at Takushoku University, after graduating he joined the JKA in 1956 becoming a direct student of Sensei Masatoshi Nakayama, and he became one of the first graduates of the Japan Karate Associations legendary Instructors Training Program.

His victory in the 1957 "All Japan Karate Championships" and subsequent victory in both kata and kumite in the 1958 "All Japan Karate Championship" ultimately led the JKA to send Shihan Kanazawa overseas to Hawaii in 1961. Several years later Shihan Kanazawa would move to England to become the Chief Instructor for the Karate Union of Great Britain.

In 1977 in a surprising move Shihan Kanzawa left the JKA and formed his own organization the Shotokan Karate International Federation (SKIF). Gichin Funakoshi is widely considered as the "father" of modern karate. He was born in Okinawa in 1868 and learnt karate from two highly respected Okinawan masters of the art, Yasutsune (Ankoh) Itosu and Yasutsune (Anko) Azato. Funakoshi modified the art, taking inspiration from traditional Japanese budo styles (kendo, judo, etc) and emphasised the philosophical aspects. It was this new karate-do that he took to the Japan and was the first expert to introduce the art to the mainland. In 1916 he gave a demonstration to the Butokuden in Kyoto, Japan, which at that time was the official centre of all martial arts. On March 6, 1921, the Crown Prince, who was later to become the Emperor of Japan, visited Okinawa and Master Funakoshi was once again asked to demonstrate karate. In the early spring of 1922 Master Funakoshi travelled to Tokyo to present his art at the First National Athletic exhibition in Tokyo organized by the Ministry of Education.

For Master Funakoshi, the word karate eventually took on a deeper and broader meaning through the synthesis of these many methods becoming karate-do, literally the "way of karate," or of the ‘empty hand. Training in Funakoshi’s karate-do progressively became an education and preparation for life itself. Master Funakoshi taught only one method, a total discipline, which represented a blending of Okinawan karate styles and Japanese budo. This method became known as Shotokan-ryu. It was through Master Funakoshi’s hard work that in 1948, the Japan Karate Association (JKA) was established. The establishment of the JKA with Masatoshi Nakayama as its headmaster after Funakoshi’s passing in 1957, lead the way to the spread of Shotokan karate throughout the world.

Sensei Masatoshi Nakayama was born in 1913 and began training in Karate under Master Funakoshi Gichin in 1931. After graduating from Takashoku University in 1937 he went to Peking to study Chinese, whilst there he also studied various styles of Chinese fighting. It was through Master Nakayama’s foresight that Shotokan is as popular as it is today as he was responsible for the global dissemination of the style in the 1960's and 1970's. He also placed Shotokan on a firm scientific foundation after performing an in-depth study of the principles of Kinesiology, Anatomy, Psychology & Physics involved in Karate training. Master Nakayama has published a number of books including "Dynamic Karate", and the “Best Karate” series, which many Shotokan stylists use in their training. He has also produced videos providing detailed technical and practical information on Kata, Kihon and Kumite. Sensei Masatoshi Nakayama passed away on April 15th, 1987 at the age of 74. He held the posthumous grade of 10thDan.

The "JKA Instructors Program" initiated by the late Master Masatoshi Nakayama enrolled the most promising students in this full time program for at least one year. Upon completion of the program, these graduates became ambassadors of JKA Shotokan Karate, introducing the art to the world

In the ensuing years, Shotokan karate was introduced and taught to thousands of students outside Japan by some of the best Shotokan karateka Japan could offer. This training continued for many years until in some cases, internal strife initiated change. However, many of those initial students are still in training, some of whom are no longer aligned to any single Japanese master, some who have no affiliation to them at all. However, they all have one thing in common; they are all now senior Shotokan instructors in their own right, with a lineage and training history second to none.

After Master Nakayama’s passing, the Japan Karate Association (JKA), was left divided into two factions. This eventually led to a break up and the sad demise of the JKA as the world knew it. One faction retained the name while many of the original JKA masters left to form their own groups. As a result, a meaningful period in karate history ended and Shotokan was left with many of its senior Japanese instructors outside the honbu of what are the remnants of the original JKA. This situation, many feel has weakened the Shotokan style and taken away a baseline from which all other Shotokan grades and training could be matched.Sensei Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264954422040494151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8908581865321682717.post-30732294097135928032009-07-14T21:24:00.004-04:002009-07-18T02:21:49.461-04:00Master Teruyuki Okazaki<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 147px; height: 163px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hAzHiO1eQ4Q/Sl0wIWOBItI/AAAAAAAAABk/hQCiNYh2a0k/s400/okazaki+10.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358492051602219730" />

Master Teruyuki Okazaki was born June 22, 1931, in Fukuoka, Japan. After studying aikido, judo, and kendo, he began karate training in 1947. Master Okazaki joined the Japan Karate Association (JKA), where he studied under both Master Gichin Funakoshi and Master Masatoshi Nakayama.

In 1953, Master Okazaki graduated from Takushoku University in Tokyo with a BA in Political Economics. In 1955, he helped Master Nakayama develop the JKA Instructor’s course. Later, as a pioneer instructor, he became the first coach of the course. He later taught at Boei University (considered Japan’s West Point), Takushoku University, and Tokyo Toritsu University. He also instructed the instructor trainees for the JKA Headquarters.

Master Okazaki was sent to the United States by JKA Chief Instructor Masatoshi Nakayama in 1961 to help share Shotokan karate with people throughout the world. He established a dojo in Philadelphia (now Headquarters for the International Shotokan Karate Federation) and formed the East Coast Shotokan Karate Association in 1963. In 1977, he founded the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), which is now one of the largest karate organizations in the world. The ISKF, of which Master Okazaki remains Chairman and Chief Instructor, has approximately fifty thousand members in over thirty countries.

Master Okazaki received the rank of 10th Dan in October of 2007. He has been a faculty member of Philadelphia’s Temple University since 1970, and is also an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, West Chester University, and Thomas Jefferson University. In June of 2007, the ISKF became independent of the JKA/WF, allowing the ISKF to spread to more countries outside of the Pan-America region. Master Okazaki conducts seminars and clinics, provides training sessions, and administers ranking examinations all across the United States, as well as internationally. He is the author of two books, The Textbook of Modern Karate, and the Perfection of Character: Guiding Principles For The Martial Arts & Everyday Life.Master Okazaki was chosen as Black Belt magazine’s Man of the Year and belongs to their Hall of Fame.

Sensei Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264954422040494151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8908581865321682717.post-15801669391148866122009-07-14T21:22:00.002-04:002009-07-14T21:46:57.313-04:00Sensei Greer Golden<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 93px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hAzHiO1eQ4Q/Sl0vp3GYxAI/AAAAAAAAABc/7DX1BIwPy1w/s320/sensei_golden_side.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358491527852639234" />

In 1957, Mr. Golden was on active duty in the Air Force, stationed in Japan. Being a “skinny” guy who was always getting pushed around, he decided to look for a school that offered Judo classes. During his search he observed a martial artist working out. Mr. Golden asked him what he was doing and the man replied, Karate. Soon thereafter, Mr. Golden began training with Mr. Noboru Kobayashi.

Mr. Golden extended his military enlistment for an additional year so he could continue to train in Japan and test for his Shodan, which he received in 1961.

During this time, he was an active competitor in Japan. In one of these tournaments, Mr. Golden fought against the captain of the Italian karate team and won and was awarded a trophy for “Best Fighting Spirit”.

After achieving his Shodan, Mr. Golden returned to the United States. While in California, Mr. Golden began training with Mr. Hidetaka Nishiyama, who had just come to America.

Mr. Golden also had the fortune to train under Mr. Yutaka Yaguchi, who was assigned to assist Mr. Nishiyama. In the mid 60’s, Mr. Nishiyama sent Mr. Golden to Arizona to teach karate. Then, in an attempt to further develop karate in America, the Japan Karate Association sent more qualified instructors from Japan to the United States. Mr. Golden returned to California after Mr. Shojiro Koyama arrived in Arizona.

In 1968 the Japan Karate Associations held its first Instructor Trainee program in the United States. Mr. Golden attended this program full-time, and graduated in 1969. This was the first instructor class to graduate outside of Japan.

He was then sent to Athens, Ohio (Ohio University) to begin teaching karate.
While in Athens, Mr. Golden began making the trip to Philadelphia to train with Mr. Okazaki, another JKA instructor.
